I didn't have the opportunity to see this TV stand in person before I bought it, but took a chance because I had trouble finding other options that were sleek-looking, affordable, not overly wide (for a smaller space), had doors and an integrated TV mount (the Sanus FMS01, which is sold separately). My biggest impression is that it looks much nicer and higher-end in person than it does in pictures. The box it came in was also surprisingly heavy, due almost entirely to the heft of the tempered glass shelves, which are quite thick. A few other points:

- Unlike the picture currently shown, the glass shelves are all undercoated with black paint, so are not transparent.

- The top shelf is not affixed to the stand, but because of its heaviness and that it sits on rubber pads, it will not be easily moved.

- The two other glass shelves also sit on rubber pads, so vibration isn't an issue (e.g. I have a subwoofer on the bottom shelf).

One problem I did have was that the pre-threaded screw holes that are used to attach the Sanus FMS01 TV mount to the DFV50 were metric when they were supposed to be imperial. Because of this I ended up stripping threads and actually breaking a screw. Sanus customer support were very helpful about this issue and sent out replacement parts straight away.

I ended up mounting a 55" plasma to the DFV50, and am impressed with how this looks, especially as the TV and stand are about the same width. I also think the height of the stand is ideal, as if you were to instead sit a 55" TV on the top shelf, the viewing height would be nearly perfect.

Value: Except for what I've stated below, it's worth the price if you have a lot of what it takes to fill this storage tower. I bought it with personal library expansion in mind.

Features: The instructions were easy to read and follow. Although, not much of an issue for myself, some of the pictures could have been a bit larger.
At 6'4" in height this thing is a beast. If you're height challenged you might need a ladder for this storage tower. Tower indeed.

Appearance: While it is just particle board, this media storage tower looks very nice. I'd expect you'd probably pay around $800-$1000 for solid wood. I bought the black finish and it looks great except for what I've stated below.

Overall rating: 4.25

The only complaint I have is the lack of thickness of the shelves.
I had expected for the price I paid that the shelves would not be so flimsy. They're only 1/4" H x 1' 11.25" W. Very flexible. Not good for holding the weight of what is intended.
While the unit does have center supports, which are located on the backboard, the shelves still sag a bit when filled.
This fact, in my opinion, detracts from the appearance slightly.
If this had 1/2" shelves I would rate this 5.0 in every category.
Also, the instructions as pictured told me to install the backboards with the red and blue color markings up towards the top of the tower. In fact the markings needed to be down as I ran into problems with the support pegs being out of line. Maybe just a factory error but check for this problem before you put all your shelves in. ;)

Synopsis:
The assembled storage tower looks great and none of the pieces were chipped, marred or broken upon inspection. The packaging was sufficient and arrived without damage. It is quite heavy as it is all in one box. I was able to carry it myself up a flight of stairs but I recommend help. The instructions were very easy to follow. Mostly pictures. If I didn't know English I still could have put this together.
When put together the unit is very sturdy and the supplied fabric-strip wall supports for earthquake prone territories were a big plus.

I'm happy with this purchase and would recommend with the above statement.

Gitzo GT2830 Series 2 Basalt 3 Section Tripod Review

I bought this tripod in preparation for a trip I was making through some of the National Parks. I live in the Southwest desert area so the summers are hot and dry and I wanted a light tripod to carry while hiking. The Manfrotto tripods, one of which I originally planned to buy, turned out to be a little too heavy. The full size aluminum ones start at 5+ lbs and the carbon fiber ones are only about a pound lighter. Since I wanted something strong enough to hold my equipment (a Canon T1i, a Canon 18-200mm lens and a Tamron 200-400mm lens) and something I would not worry about falling apart, I ended up choosing this Gitzo. The carbon fiber tripods were way out of my budget, but the Basalt were almost as light and considerably less expensive. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the features.

1) I was used to the latch locks and did not expect to like the twist locks, but found to my surprise that they are more convenient and comfortable to use than the latches. As the advertisement says, I can unlock both on each leg at the same time, so setup is quick and easy. The twist locks seem to hold well and I have grown quite fond of them in the short time I have had this tripod,

2) The tripod came with a tool kit (actually a bunch of hex keys) to keep the screws tight. I was not expecting that,

3) The top plate where the head mounts has a screw for tightening against the head to make sure the head stays stable and a second screw to tighten against the extension column to keep the plate stable. But the plate tightens well and I don't believe either screw will be needed,

4) The tripod is light. It is not as light as some of the competing Chinese tripods (one of the full-size Giottos is less than 1 Kg, this is 1.35 Kg), but it is light enough that I almost don't notice it when I carry it on my back,

5) The hook that Gitzo provides for adding weight to stabilize the tripod is positioned at the end of the extension column exactly in the middle of the tripod. This is, in my opinion. much better than the off-center hook on the Monfrotto tripod. The hook is spring loaded so it retracts when not in use, and

6) The tripod actually looks quite nice. I did not expect to care about how it looks, but the colors and simplicity of the tripod makes it look very nice.

This is a full-size tripod and, when the legs are fully extended and the head and camera attached, I have to actually stand on my toes to look through the view finder. As nice as this tripod is, there appears to be at least one issue. When I extended the tripod legs fully, mounted the head and camera and took a time exposure of about 2 seconds, the image was not as sharp as I would have expected. When viewed at the actual pixel level, there appeared to be some blurring due, I assume, to camera movement during the time exposure. It was not much, but it was there. I then retracted the lower part of the leg to put the camera at eye level and tried again. No change. I then reduced it even more and compensated with the center column and the picture was spot-on. All of these were taken with the camera lens IS turned off, mirror-lockup enabled on my camera and using a 2 second self-timer. I was, as you can imagine, disappointed. I don't want to stress this too much. It only happened with time exposures on the order of 2+ seconds and not with normal slow photos. And it also did not happen if the legs were not fully extended.

Clearly the tripod is light enough that camera vibrations from multi-second time exposures were enough to cause picture blurring. But before giving up on this tripod I tried hanging about a pound of weight on the central column hook and that seemed to take care of the problem. With that weight the time exposures were crisp and clear without any blurring and were as sharp as the slow photos I took at the same height. Since the problem only seems to occur for long time exposures I don't think this will be much of a problem, but I will start carrying a rock bag when I hike with it just in case.

All in all I am very happy with the tripod. It was almost affordable for me, it is light enough for me to carry, it holds my camera and lenses well enough and the problems that I see are surely due to the lightness of the tripod itself and are easily addressed. I am quite happy with the Gitzo and recommend it with those reservations.

CybertronPC Strike-GTX Gaming PC (Orange) Review

I was hesitant to buy a pre-built system as you never really fully know what you are going to get.

I took it out of the box, and everything is included - all the booklets for the hardware and the motherboard and video card CDs with drivers are included. The only thing I wish they had left was the extra expansion card covers, but for most poeple this won't be a problem. They can be ordered off amazon in any case (which I did as I put a single GTX 670 card I already had into it, replacing the SLI setup).

It fired right up and asked for info to set up Windows, then activated Windows without issue. You do NOT get a Windows install CD with it, just in case you are wondering. (I bought that with the system as well as some other parts I'll explain below).

I was curious what the Windows experience would say so I tested it and it got a 7.6 (out of 7.9) for the CPU, 7.9 for memory, 7.8 for both graphics categories and 5.6 for the hard drive. I expected a bit better on the hard drive as it's a Seagate 7200 drive on Sata III, but that's what I got.

I made some mods, as I mentioned putting in my GTX 670, and adding a Samsung SSD, transferring over the data from the hard drive, and setting it as the boot drive in the BIOS. I then retested and the CPU and memory were the same as expected, graphics was now 7.9, and the disk was also now 7.9. From hitting the start button to being booted into Windows and ready to go is under a minute - I timed it. (Again please note it's NOT this fast out of the box but with an SSD).

The fan control on the case is a nice touch and it has plenty of fans. It was well-constructed. The motherboard was the z68 chipset, the power supply was an In-Win commander II (850 watts), the hard drive was Seagate as mentioned, and the SLI video cards were PNY.

It came with the programs for using the BD drive, Avast free version anti-virus, a program to clean your cookies and a freeware Office clone which I deleted as I put in the real thing.

So far I've had it for a day, but it runs and performs well. I'm eager to try out some games and see how much faster this is than what I was using.

Based on what I've seen so far I give this a thumbs up. If it performs as expected and stands the test of time, I'll be very pleased, and if it doesn't I'll update this review.
