I purchased this in August 2010 excellent delivery time, The 898cSI is great sonar unit wished I had purchased earlier. My one recomendation would be to study the manual and fimilarize your self with settings and operation in the simulation mode this will save you lots of time on the water. Don't forget to register with Hummingbird I received my unit and there were updates already available which I updated as soon as I installed the unit. Make sure to reset defaults before and after updates are installed.

The reason that I chose this scope is because all the reviews that I had seen on it were very positive and I wanted to match the camo on my gun. I have not yet used this scope but thought I should write a review for anyone who is trying to match the camo on their gun. I have a Remmington R-15 in Realtree Max-1. I was hoping for a better match. This scope is a little browner than the photo shows and my gun. It does not look bad, it is just not as close as I was hoping.

Definitive Technology In-Wall RCS III Referance Ceiling Surround/Wall (Single, White) Review

First, let me give you the one word review: Amazing! Now for the longer version . . . I read a ton of reviews and visited a local home electronics store, but I never actually heard the Definitive Technology speakers until I heard them installed in my house. I saw that the number of Definitive Technology speaker reviews was low, but that the reviews were universally excellent. There seemed to be 2 kinds of speaker reviewers out there: first, there is the audiophile type reviewer that can't wait to tell you all about their brand of receiver, room size, flux capacitors, highs-lows, best DVD for viewing, etc., second, the broken English reviews by people who just wanted to throw something quickly out on the Internet, usually something like "the speekers rok!!! The sownds gooder than my uld speekers that wer crppy." So . . . I hope to deliver a meaningful high-level review that provides the information you need to make YOUR decision.

I purchased an entire set of Definitive Technology speakers, (3) RCS-III for right, center, left, (2) RSS-III for side surrounds, and (1) Supercube-II for the subwoofer. I also purchased a new model of receiver from Onkyo, the NR-808. I was nervous about (2) things when it came to in-ceiling speakers. I was nervous about the sound quality and I was nervous about the installation. The sound quality is truly worth the money and you can't tell for a second that you have ceiling speakers. I can tell you that the installation did take some planning and effort because I put all (5) speakers into the ceiling of a finished basement where I didn't have unfettered access to the crawlspace. But, with a little fishtape (a rigid metal tape that you use to "fish" cables under carpet or through crawlspaces - about $25 at your local home improvement store) and a little luck I was set. I seriously considered the RCS-II and RSS-II speakers with the Supercube I, but I can tell you that for my size of room (medium-large size family room with 8 foot ceilings) that the III series and Supercube II is definitely MORE than enough.

Everything from the quality of the packaging and the installation guides is Top Quality stuff, you can tell that Definitive Technology takes their craft very seriously. Amazon did a great job delivering, too.

If you are reading the reviews for the Definitive Technology speakers (and you would be if you are reading this) then you can afford to spend some dough on speakers. You will be glad you did.

By the way, the highway scene from the Matrix Reloaded is pretty amazing and gives the system a chance to really stretch out.

Bose Wave Music System - Platinum White Review

UPDATE DECEMBER 2011... 7 YEARS LATER WITH THE BOSE NEW WAVE MUSIC SYSTEM: Hard to believe it has been seven years since I wrote the review below. My Wave Music System is still going strong. The CD transport failed a few years ago, but Bose replaced it for fifty bucks, and it's hard to argue with that. And yes, I'm still a Bose basher, finding most of their slickly marketed products to be as overpriced and underwhelming as ever. So, has my enthusiasm for the Wave System dimmed over time? Let me put it this way...

I recently did some renovations in my living room and had to pack up my main audio rig during the process. I've upgraded that system since I wrote the Wave review--it's now based on about $45K in electronics and the speakers were recently ranked amongst the ten best speaker systems in the world. Not trying to impress here, just establish the point of comparison. And while renovations continued, I didn't want to be without music, so I moved my Bose Wave System from its place in the bedroom to the living room, where I listened to it on a daily basis. Did I miss my main rig? Of course I did, and that's not surprising. But what DID surprise me daily was how much musical enjoyment the Bose could provide even when compared to something approaching a cost-no-object system. Instead of thinking, "I can't wait til my main rig is up and running again," the thought that most often crossed my mind was, "You know, if the Bose had to be my only music system, I'd be okay with that."

Now, before anyone gets the wrong idea and accuses me of Bose fanboy insanity, let be clear: I'm not saying the Bose sounds like or even close to my main rig. It doesn't, nor should it at a tiny fraction of the price and size. But what I said seven years ago is just as true today, even when compared against such a system: the Wave Music System is extremely musical and just sounds "right," across a broad spectrum of musical genres. It has many sonic strengths and no obvious flaws that would detract from your listening enjoyment. As an added bonus over the years, its AUX IN port has allowed me to play my iPod and Squeezebox devices through the Wave System, and both sound really great.

Fair disclosure: my Wave System is (obviously) seven years old and I haven't listened to Bose's newest revisions of this model. Whether they have made changes in design or parts that might adversely affect the sound, I can't say. But assuming they haven't messed with a winner, the Wave Music System still gets five stars from me.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

Yes, you read that right. But before I get to the review, a confession:

As a life-long audiophile, I have long felt that Bose represented the pinnacle of overpriced hype and underwhelming sound quality. The true genius of Amar Bose, in my opinion, is that he has created a distinctive "Bose sound" that appeals greatly to mass market consumers who don't know any better. Spend some time listening to truly good audio systems, and you'll quickly realize that Bose is a high-priced, superbly marketed joke. And unfortunately, I have to live with Bose mediocrity on a daily basis in the form of a Bose audio system "upgrade" in my Acura MDX. (Which I was forced to take as part of the touring package.) It cranks out 'okay' sound at best, and is no where near as good as "stock" audio systems in some of my previously owned vehicles. The most positive thing I can say is that my Acura Bose system sounds better than the Bose system in my friend's Mercedes.

By now you should be getting the idea that I'm the last person in the world inclined to give a Bose product a compliment, no less a five star review. What happened? Well, I was looking for a compact, one piece music system for my home office. And in the world of audio, I realize there is no such thing as a free lunch--designing such a system requires that sound quality be compromised to various degrees along the way. So I certainly wasn't expecting this unit to sound anything like the $10K Sonus Faber speakers in my main rig. What I wanted was good quality sound that, muscially speaking, got the important things right, with no obvious "wrongs."

With these parameters, I quickly realized that there are not many systems out there worth considering. The Cambridge Soundworks 740 soon became my top contender, but I wasn't really happy with it. Yes, it's got bass to spare, but it's bass that I find to be somewhat out of balance with the overall sound, and there's simply no way to tame it. And so, begrudgingly, I decided to give Bose's "New Wave Music System" a listen--after all, I could return it if I didnt like the sound, which I fully expected to be doing. And yet, nearly a month after it arrived in my home, I'm here to sing its praises.

Simply put, the New Wave Music System sounds better than I ever imagined possible with a unit of this size. It's extremely musical and just sounds "right," (whether it be rock, hip-hop, jazz or classical) with many sonic strengths and no obvious flaws. It will easily fill an average-sized room with music, and there's no sense of strain as you push it to higher volumes. For many if not most consumers, the New Wave may be as much "music system" as you'll ever need. One of the downsides to the audiophile pursuit is that you increasing tend to listen analytically, rather than for enjoyment. With the New Wave system, I've rediscovered the pleasure of just popping in a CD and letting it play. I"ve also found both the AM and FM receivers to be quite good, as well.

I really like the sleek, compact design, though I suspect I'll be cursing the "no buttons" approach the first time I (inevitably) lose the remote. And, being always suspicious of Bose's motives, I suspect this design may have been driven by bean counters who saw a way to reduce manufacturing costs by eliminating all on-case controls.

Is it overpriced? Well, if you're the type of person for whom "good enough" is usually good enough, you may want to look elsewhere. But for a product that I truly enjoy using on a daily basis, this was well worth the price. And compared to the insanity of high-end audio, where a 1 meter interconnect can run 3,000 bucks, $500 is downright reasonable.

Overall, I give the New Wave a "Bravo, Bose!" and I'd encourage any audiophiles looking for a small second system to give this a listen. You can always return it within 30 days, but I'd plan on it being a keeper.

JVC Everio GZMC500 5MP 3CCD 4GB Microdrive Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom Review

Had this digicam for about 24 hours and here are my first impressions:
I own a Panasonic SV AV100 which saves mpeg2 video and mpg4 to a SD card. It did it well and I was pleased with it, but the low resolution digital camera function was surpassed by some wireless phones. I wanted a device that took high resolution photos and digital mpeg2 video saved to a memory card that could be immediately loaded to PC and burnt to DVD. The JVC GZ-MC100 and MC200 took 2mp pictures and saved mpeg2 video to a 4 gb microdrive or SD card, but had poor low light performance - worse than my little Panasonic. So, it was with some anxiety that I shelled out $1595 for the GZ-MC500.

I bought it hoping that the new 3CCD video chip would not only give better color video and good 5mp jpeg pictures, but that JVC would have taken the time to improve low light performance... and they did.

In bright light the automatic videocam performance of the camera is really good. Indoors without any light on and bright sunlight coming in the window, the video remained sharp with pretty good color saturation and no graininess to my eye when played back on TV directly from camera. The MC500 seems to really be working much, much better in low light conditions than the MC100/200s before it. At night with room lights on, I took more videos and although there was some dimming of the picture, the video was still bright and not grainy. Color still looked good though there was some loss of color saturation in those conditions. In a completely dark room, forget about it since there is no infrared function. But I did not care about that. Much better in low light than my Panasonic SV-AV100 overall. Microphone picked up voices/sounds in stereo very well.

The interface is intuitive and easy to navigate for me.

The camera bottom heats up while recording to microdrive and I never recorded more than 5 minutes of video but the heat build up was quite noticeable. Unlike my Panasonic, there is no remote control which is quite disappointing in a $1600 digicam that is begging for immediate video playback to TV directly from camera.

In summary, I am both relieved at the camera's good low light performance and very happy with the camera's mpeg2 video quality and very happy with the 5mp jpeg picture performance. I would give this camera 4.5 stars out of five taking off 1/2 point for lack of remote control.
