When The ED81S was introduced , it set a new standard for 80mm APO Refractors. The combination of better color correction from the new ED glass and brighter images from its fast f/7.7 focal ratio will satisfy the most demanding visual astronomer or astro-photographer. The new ED glass produces clear and high contrast viewing, virtually free of false color. The design uses newly developed glass technolgy. The optical tube is very stable yet light weight. The top carry handle also includes a 1/2-20 stud for piggyback camera mounting. Vixen's new Dual Speed Focuser, now standard on the ED81, provides fine focus adjustments for 1/7th speed focusing.

Purchased this scope directly from Amazon. This is an excellent deep-sky photography oriented apo with the matching f/5.2 reducer as many images testify to its excellent optics on astrobin.com. It represents the top of the two element ED design, results are on par with run-of-the-mill triplets and even some quad astrographs. The two speed focuser is decent, not a Moonlight but one can definitely do AP (astrophotography) with it as it is, assuming that the camera is not too heavy (fine for DSLR AP, but wouldn't want to set up a long and heavy train on it). The OTA (telescope itself) is very lightweight, easily handled by small GEMs (or german equatorial mounts, required for long exposures, such as the Celestron Advanced VX), making medium field AP possible with these light and (relatively) low priced mounts. Visually it performs as expected - flawless images from center to edge of field, no visible fringing even on bright stars or the Moon, but the small aperture limits its reach on deep sky objects. Verdict: get it while supplies last. There are so many 80mm APO's - why not get a very good one without breaking the bank?
