These speakers are absolutely killer, offering exceptional performance for the money. While $1798 is not chump change, especially in today's tumultuous economic environment, these speakers offer tremendous value for the money. Featuring a fairly large cabinet with four 8" active and passive drivers, these speakers move a lot of air with dynamic sound filled with excellent speed and articulation. Combining deep bass with traditional British values of pace, rhythm and timing, these speakers throw a huge soundstage with excellent tonal balance that is not out of balance in any portion of the frequency range. While the cabinet offers little in terms of sex appeal, simply pretending to be nothing more than the well made box it is, the drivers housed within the cabinet are special. In particular, the dual concentric midrange and tweeter are the result of years of research and development that yield sound free from any obvious coloration. Combined with the new aluminum 8" woofers, this dual concentric arrangement of midrange and tweeter drivers deliver incredibly clean vocals and high frequency extension that integrate seamlessly with the powerful mid and deep bass of the three woofers below. Regardless or source material, be it orchestral or stadium rock on the one hand or chamber music or female vocals on the other, these speakers play all types of music well at low, medium, or loud volumes. Currently the least expensive pair of speakers in Stereophile's full range Class B Recommended Components, the Q900s stand tall among the best available today. You can pay more for better resolution, less cabinet coloration, and overall refinement, but the law of diminishing returns begins to kick in beyond this price point.
