CowboyStudio 3000 Watt Photo Studio and Video Softbox Lighting Light Kit Boom Set & Carry Case Review

After purchasing their boom pole separately a month back and really loved the quality, I decided to "upgrade" my lighting system with Cowboy Studio's three light kit. Previously (and unknowingly) I purchased a softbox ONLY made for speedlights and have been using electric tape to fasten a bulb to the back of the speedlight's softbox. Without a doubt, the head unit on these new lights are a tremendous improvement with the 5 bulb capacity.

I took off a star for the lack of build quality. The rods that are provided are like dowel rods. In the process of setting up the softbox, some of the tips of the rods that connect to the head unit were bending and snapping from the tension. It should not have been any concern since I would not notice that half inch, but on one side of the head unit, it made the insertion hole MUCH larger and could no longer hold the rod securely. I ended up shoving the head unit into my speedlight's softbox since I could no longer assemble the softbox. So one of my 5 bulb head unit became a 1 bulb unit.

Also, one morning, I came into my garage to find one of the two softboxes completely unraveled. Again, the tension of the rods snapped on the end that was connected to the head unit. One last thing, the rod holes on the head unit is very inconsistent. On some, I felt the hole was deep enough to cause a "snap" like it was locking into place. On the others holes (on the same unit), I could stick the rod in and it would fall right out.

The video of this unit on Youtube has the neck of the softbox with an elastic collar. They have since then used Velcro to fasten the neck, which is very tedious to handle. Not sure if it makes the process any harder but it took me a good hour to assemble all 3.

I actually bought this directly from the Cowboy Studio showroom since they are down the highway from me. Originally, I placed an order on Amazon but had concerns with the two month availability time frame. I could have returned the damaged head unit but decided it was not worth the hassle and the 15 mile trip. The softbox is 20"x28" and the spare (of much better quality) was 20"x20".

Overall, I would purchase again if budget is a concern. Definitely buy something of higher quality if you can afford it. Think of this like Ikea.. the end result of the softbox will depend on how good you are with your hands.
