Parrot Design Zikmu Wireless Hi-Fi Speakers by Philippe Starck (Arctic White) Review

The unique selling point for me was that this product can receive arbitrary sound from PCs through WiFi with relatively little delay (1-2 seconds). The PC software works like a virtual sound card and can therefore be used with any software player whatsoever. I personally mostly use MediaMoney on the PC.

Because I had read many negative reviews and heard warnings of frequent gaps in playback I was quite sceptically initially. So before buying, I asked my local HiFi shop whether I could test the speakers at home.

Quite surprisingly really, the WiFi playback works without a hitch in my home WLAN. I have not heard a single audio gap yet, not even when I tried to put maximum load on my WLAN router (creating high traffic on 4 other devices simultaneously). I have a very stable and fast WLAN router, I am sure this helps. I have one of the speakers about 6 meters from my router, with the other about 4 meters further away.

Bluetooth works fine as well for me, both from my PC and from my Android mobile. Because my PC is not connected to my WLAN (it's plugged straight into my LAN switch), I had to do the initial setup and connection through bluetooth. It was not reasonably self-explanatory, I did not have to consult the manual. On the other hand, I am an IT guy, so I am comfortable with networking issues.

The sound quality in the initial setup was a little bit disappointing, because, as I found out, the speakers were running in Video mode (with reduced DSP). Once I changed them from Video mode into Audio mode, the sound was good, about what can be expected given the size and weight.

I have a rather large living room (60sqm) so it was important for me to have the omnipolar sound that these speakers produce. They do fill the room rather evenly with sound at good quality. The 360 degree sound dispersion works well for my intended use - there is no sweet spot.

I have also tested the UPnP mode both from my Android mobile (using the UPnPlay app), which worked really well and with surprisingly low delay. In my tests, UPnP from my PC with Windows 7 Media Player worked less well (Media Player froze up a few times), but it's much more practical to play back through the virtual sound card anyway, so really not a limitation for me.

The web interface to the device works reasonably well as well, including the direct UPnP access to my TwonkyServer.

Updating the firmware via the PC application failed at first, so I updated through the web interface, which worked fine.

---

So, if you are looking for well distributed 360 degree sound, wireless connectivity, and you have a stable and fast home WLAN then I can recommend the speakers.
