Unlike most ribbon motors designed today with an offset ribbon the new Cascade FAT HEAD houses a hand-tuned ribbon element that incorporates the legendary symmetrical ribbon design. This design offers a true figure 8 pattern. The corrugated aluminum membrane itself is positioned in the center from front to back, thus producing a balanced audio input signal to both sides of the ribbon assembly. This design is very useful when executing a mid-side or Blumlein recording set-up and also great for live stage use. Cascade Fathead mics can sound great on violins, cellos, or anything that can
afford to lose a bit of top end when miked up close....
As an orchestra mic they give you the recording sound from the early part of the
last century, very warm :)
They have that extra mysterious, evocative blooming quality that can be missing
from more accurate mics.
Having the bar included is very helpful, the classic Blumlein pair is a great way to
achieve a sense of space and width.
Was so happy with these I bought a second pair, one gold, one silver, IMHO the
silver ones look slightly better, less gaudy.
I use mine to mic up rooms for ambience, and for anything that is a bit too bright.
Only thing I'm worried about is an accidental burst of phantom.... to avoid that,
I am saving up for a pair of Cloudlifter CL-2's, a signal boost that can also be
helpful as a phantom buffer.
So far noise and level has not been a problem, they work fine with my standard
preamps.
By the way, as an added physical protection I found that the MXL WS-002 foam
windscreen fits these mics just right :)
